The Best Job in Holyoke

March is a busy time of the year in Holyoke, seeing as how the city hosts the second largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the country. But for Teresa Shepard '83, it's always a busy time of year in Holyoke.

As director of parks and recreation department, Teresa has been active managing the numerous parks in the Paper City. The city recently built a skateboarding park at Pulaski park and completely renovated Veteran's Park, adding new lighting, trees, and seating. In 2012 the city renovated Community Park, including a new ice skating path and an enclosed dog park. Teresa said they are waiting on a grant to renovate one of the parks in the lower wards as well.

Teresa also oversees the management of Mackenzie Field, home to the Elms College Blazers baseball team.

"I have the best job in the city," Teresa stated. "Every day is different. It's a challenge but it's fun."

A native of Pittsfield, Teresa has spent most of her career working in Holyoke. As a student majoring in social work, she landed an internship at the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club. They liked her so much they brought her on as a program director after she graduated.

Through her experience at the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, she became involved in the parks and recreation department and has been working there ever since.
